In the past I never knew what to do with my space. I have always been creative but when it comes to decorating, I go completely blank! The question was always, where do I begin? I liked so many styles, patterns, colors, and pretty much everything I see shopping. I would say I’m a very eclectic person. Therefore, when it comes deciding on one theme, I just couldn’t commit. One day I would feel edgy, the next I would want something romantic, after that I want something simple and modern. No, I’m not bipolar. My problem is I love everything equally! I still battle with having just one idea. Therefore, to help my indecisive mind, I would redecorate every few months to keep things interesting, fresh, and me. It’s fun to change and switch things up. you can enjoy all the wonderful things you love. Find creativity in repurposing or decorating and keep things fresh according to the different seasons. If you’re indecisive like me and love everything you see a store, here are a few great tips to changing it up and keeping things fresh again.
1. First I like to start with a clean slate. I put everything into a corner and clean until the walls and the floors are completely bare.
2. Second is the idea making process. It’s time to start brainstorming for inspiration and room decor ideas. I’ve created a pinning board for myself on Pinterest with home décor posts. You can check it out here.
A great tip is to collect home décor magazines, or find pictures on the Internet and save them in a folder. I try to find a colored theme, style (i.e. edgy, vintage, shabby chic), or even a story to inspire my home decorations.
Another great way to start with an inspiration is to start with an item that you really, really love and could represent you currently. For instance, above is a vintage sewing machine I scored off of Craigslist. I’ve been looking for something like this and I finally found the perfect one. This sewing machine inspires me so many ways on how to decorate. Therefore, I suggest you decorate around one item that inspires you. Think of the color scheme that will suit it or even use the color from that statement item. Ask yourself what kind of style is it – modern, vintage, quirky? Just recently, I purchased this vintage sewing machine that had belonged to a grandmother that was very passionate about sewing. It’s so lovely and I just absolutely adore it! I plan on making it the centerpiece of my studio space.
To dress up your bare walls, you can make a gallery. Simply get a collection of framed art or photographs that represent you and your style. To see more on how to make a gallery wall, check out this video.
Here’s a great example by www.abeautifulmess.com
Before hanging the frames, create paper cutouts of your frames by tracing around the frames on a sheet of paper and cutting it out. Tape the paper cutouts to the wall with painters tape in an arrangement that looks good to you. Then, hammer in the hooks, remove the paper, and hang up the frames. Tada! You have a newly decorated wall!
3. Comes the fun and that is to start shopping and collecting samples. You don’t have to buy everything at once. Take your time and find the things that you really need, want, and love. I had so many moments where I buy too many things and lost my interest in it after a few days.
Start by buying things you know are practical, something you will use daily. A clock, organizers, a bookshelf etc.
